The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejects the manipulation by the Department of State of the United States of America relating to the case of U.S. citizen Joshua Holt, who is facing serious charges of threatening the security of the Venezuelan State and is currently on trial. The aforementioned citizen has been attended by his lawyer and has exercised his legitimate right to a defense, as is guaranteed by the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. In this regard, it is up to the case judge to determine the innocence or guilt of the accused, without political obstruction or interference of any kind.

It is false that Mr. Holt’s life is in danger for lack of or insufficient medical care. This is demonstrated by the fact that on December 12, the case judge was able to verify his health status and there is no cause to grant him a humanitarian release.

We regret that the government of the United States is attempting to portray a criminal case in political terms for disreputable aims, when in the past, similar cases have been handled as they should be: within the consular field by the authorities of both countries, in accordance with the respective legal procedures and with no type of conflict.

We reiterate that Venezuela abides by its international commitments, including consular access for foreign citizens who have been detained, as well as due process, which is a constitutional guarantee.

For this reason, we demand respect for Venezuelan institutions and legal proceedings, as well as an immediate ceasing of the campaign of distortion that attacks our judicial system.
