President Nicolás Maduro reaffirmed on Wednesday that Venezuelan and the 120 members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) give their full solidarity and support to the Palestinian cause and vehemently reject the most recent interference by the United States and President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem, the capital of Palestine, as the alleged capital of Israel.

“Venezuela brings to Istanbul the voice of solidarity and absolute support to the cause of Palestine and rejects the Trump administration’s declaration on the issue of Jerusalem,” the Venezuelan President emphasized during his remarks on the Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which is addressing the grave, unilateral and arbitrary decision by the United States to move its embassy from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem.

The President expressed the concern of the 120 NAM member state for the arbitrariness of the decision by the U.S. government against the Palestinian people and the sacred city of Jerusalem. He also noted that this extreme decision lacks legal validity and violates international law; as such, it should be rescinded.

President Maduro further declared that in this context of a threat against the peace process, the member states of NAM reaffirm their support and solidarity with the Palestinian people and give their commitment to contributing to finding a fair, comprehensive and sustainable resolution to the conflict, given that any unilateral and provocative action in Jerusalem could seriously destabilize the fragile situation on the ground and result in dangerous consequences.

“The NAM reaffirms its historical support and solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people, with contributing to a fair, lasting and peaceful resolution in all its aspects in conformity with international law, and will continue supporting the heroic people in their quest to achieve legitimate national aspiration, including their right to self-determination, liberty and independence in their State with Jerusalem as its capital,” Maduro stressed.

He also urged the U.S. government to cease its violations and provocations and recalled the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, including the prohibition on acquiring territories by forces, as well as the other clauses that are applicable to international law, particularly the fourth Geneva Convention.

The Venezuelan President called for respecting Security Council Resolutions 476 and 478 of 1980, through which the body confirmed that all actions and measures of a legislative and administrative nature taken by Israel, the occupying force, lack legal validity and should therefore be rescinded immediately.

“We reiterate the importance of spurring international efforts in the search for dialogue and a peaceful, fair and lasting resolution to the question of Palestine,” he remarked.

“On behalf of the NAM, I congratulate the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League, and we commit ourselves, within the framework of the United Nations system, to immediately undertake every effort for this issue to be addressed and immediately corrected,” President Maduro said.
