Unesco declares the work songs of the Venezuelan plains as Intangible Heritage of Humanity PDF Print E-mail

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on Tuesday made a new inscription on the list of Intangible Heritage of Humanity of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), in recognition of the work songs of the plains as cultural manifestation, something shared with the Republic of Colombia.

The declaration took place during the twelfth meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which takes place on the island of Jeju, in the Republic of Korea, from Monday 4 to Saturday 9 December 2017.

The songs of work of the plains constituted one of the six candidatures of inscription in the List of the Intangible Heritage that needs urgent measures of safeguard, whose objective is to obtain cooperation and international assistance for threatened cultural expressions.

This declaration represents a new achievement of the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela that guarantees cultural diversity and, in turn, the protection of cultural manifestations that need to be safeguarded.

The Venezuelan Ambassador to Unesco, Héctor Constant Rosales, said that "with this declaration Venezuela universalizes a popular tradition maintained for centuries thanks to llaneros, men and women whose daily milking task caresses the symbiosis with nature and exalts the memories of the Homeland forged in the Arauca plains. It is also the commitment of the Bolivarian Government to safeguard the richness of this cultural manifestation for generations to come, who will be able to learn the value of the land through the gentle melodies of La Tonada".

The work songs of the plain are added to the declaration of Intangible Heritage of the Humanity of the Dancing Devils of Venezuela (2012), Parranda de San Pedro (2013), the vocal tradition of the Mapoyo indigenous people (2014), knowledge and techniques traditional activities related to the cultivation and processing of the curagua (2015) and the carnivals of El Callao (2016).
