Martin Tovar y Tovar

187 years ago was born in Caracas the painter Martín Tovar y Tovar author of works such as the Battle of Carabobo, Junin, Ayacucho and portraits of Doña Juana Vernie, Soublette and Monagas, among others.

In his youth he had as teachers of drawing Carmelo Fernández Carranza and Celestino Martinez. Under their guardianships he received the first knowledge about painting.

At 23 he traveled to Europe, specifically Spain and France, where he took classes from Jose Federico de Madrazo, Antonio Esquivel and León Cogniet.

He devoted himself to painting portraits, for which possessed the gift of capturing the features of the model with plastic sense. His work as a portraitist is extensive, and includes a gallery of heroes and important characters of independence that he painted.

He was the author of the monumental work decorating the dome in the Oval Room of the Federal Legislative Palace in Caracas.
